A Midwinter Night Dram Straight Rye Whiskey 750ml
When it comes to limited release bourbon and rye whiskey, the “finished” corner of the market is an interesting little fiefdom. Although many of the most hyped, premiere products in this space simply feature big age statements and big proofs, finishing a spirit in fortified wine or alternate spirit barrels can also confer “prestige” status in some cases … though not all. There are a handful of “finished” brands, however, that the whiskey world really embraces with the full-on hype usually reserved solely for Buffalo Trace products, and one of those is definitely High West’s A Midwinter Night’s Dram—a port barrel-finished rye whiskey. This bottle is certainly a boon for High West, giving the company a legit, blue chip “hype brand” that whiskey collectors frequently go far out of their way to acquire. Though it boasts a pretty luxe MSRP (which has risen as of late) of $150, it’s not uncommon to see whiskey hunters offering $300-400 for this one on the secondary market. This year’s release, meanwhile, is Act 10, commemorating a decade of Midwinter Night’s Dram release

About the brand
High West Bourbon has one of the biggest cult followings in the contemporary bourbon whiskey scene, tremendously popular for its unique approach to whiskey making and penchant for crafting aesthetic bottles that are as ornamental as they are great tasting. With craft-styled iterations mixed in with some more traditional varieties, High West caters to a following that appreciates the classics but is more than game enough to experiment with a more unique, modern approach to distilling. Whether it is the Midwinter Night Dram, Yippee Ki-Yay or the Rocky Mountain straight, or any of their other ever-popular bourbon whiskeys and spirits, High West is a must-include in any new-age whiskey collection.

A cool blanketed night here in the Metro Detroit region discovers me looking for a decent measure to end the night. A Midwinter Nights Measure on this mid winters night seems like an ideal match. Because of @Scott_E of the SDT bunch I happen to have an example. Act 4 scene 1 which comes in at 49.3% ABV in all likelihood common shading and non chill separated. The shading is a lovely dim red mahogany no uncertainty to some degree from the port barrel wrapping up. This is a mix of sourced ryes. I wont go into the piece honestly in light of the fact that I didnt trouble to find it. The nose begins with an enormous minty dill pickle. In that spot is a miss for me cant stand dill pickles. Proceeding onward. A decent arrangement of rye flavor and some oak oak that was sanded smooth with stale rye bread. Dill vegetable plunge a touch hearty. Rich English toffee caramel and some maple syrup. Extremely light natural products apricot pits unpretentious fruits. Vanilla at long last appears inevitably. At the base of the glass I got a startling note of overripe mango. I didnt get the port completion so I chose to add a little water to check whether I could cajole it out. Sure enough it worked yet it was dominated by the solid rye notes. A pink bubblegum note came through also. The sense of taste begins hot and sweet. Loads of rye and oak. Like the nose loads of dill and mint. Rich toffee caramel vanilla and a few natural products. Apple skins pears and cherry hack syrup. Very little else that I could select with all that dill in the manner until I included a little water. After that I got that equivalent bubblegum note and the subtle port completion. A medium to full bodied mouthfeel dry however somewhat sleek. Medium long get done with bunches of mint dill a portion of that bubblegum and rye. I truly had high trusts in this one in the wake of seeing all the recognition it gets. Lamentably the dill notes were simply excessively solid for my enjoying. I can tell its professional and most would presumably adore it however its just not my style. Of the ryes Ive had (and thats just a bunch) this one was most likely the heaviest on those dill notes. Happy to have attempted it since Ive had it on my list of things to get for some time however now I know not to search out a full jug. 3.75 which is as yet a good score as I would like to think. Good health

Act 2.7 Fruity flavors in advance that blur into a zesty rye with huge amounts of cinnamon. Finish is long with loads of dried natural products.
